10Base2
(Cheapernet, Thinnet)

10Base2 is a shorthand term for an Ethernet specification using thin coaxial cable. 10Base2 is part of the IEEE 802.3 specification. It is also known as cheapernet or thinnet.

The name 10Base2 is derived from several characteristics of the physical medium. The 10 comes from the maximum transmission speed of 10 Mbit/s. The Base stands for the fact that baseband signalling is used. The 2 represents a rounded up shorthand for the maximum segment length of 185 meters (607 feet; 185 is rounded up to 200, hence the 2).
