LTE Advanced is a major enhancement of the LTE standard to fulfill the requirements for IMT-Advanced. LTE Advanced will be capable of providing peak data rates of up to 1 Gbit/s towards the user and 500 Mbit/s back. To provide for such high data rates, LTE Advanced will introduce a scalable frequency bandwith up to 100 MHz, this is five times the maximum bandwith of a LTE channel, and from spectrum aggregation of non-contigious radio spectrum channels.
The standardization of LTE-Advanced started in 2008. LTE Advanced will be standardised in the 3GPP specification as of Release 10.
