Wireless Avionics Intra-Communications
(WAIC)

Wireless Avionics Intra-Communications (WAIC) systems provide wireless internal communications in an aircraft. The wireless communications is used for the safe, reliable and efficient operation of the aeroplane.

WAIC systems are intended to support data, voice and video communications between systems on an aircraft to monitor different areas on the aircraft and to provide communications for the crew. It is envisioned that wireless sensors located at various points on the aircraft will be used to wirelessly monitor the health of the aircraft structure and all of its critical systems, and communicate this information within the aircraft to those who can make the best use of such information.

In all cases, communication is part of a closed, exclusive network required for the safe and reliable operation of the aircraft. WAIC systems are not intended for communications from air-to-ground, air-to-air to other aircrafts or any other communications outside the aircraft. WAIC is also not intended to provide wireless networking services to passengers.

WAIC is an initiative of the Aerospace Vehicle Systems Institute (AVSI). AVSI is a cooperative in which the Aerospace industries, government agencies and academia work together in the development of aerospace vehicles.
