MDM - Mobile Device Management

Mobile Device Management (MDM) is the remote managing of mobile handsets, by the mobile provider. MDM ensures that all handsets are always up-to-date configurated and fully functional. Management is done by (usually over-the-air) connection of a mobile phone to the providers management server to check the configuration and the version of the on the mobile installed software. If needed, the configuration or software is updated.

MDM is used to enable users to access and utilise the latest mobile services, including video and audio streaming, instant messaging (IM) and mobile content. Mobile Device Management can also provide automatic back up of the users content, such as the address book, on the telephone or the SIM card. If the handset is stolen, the mobile can be locked or its data can be deleted. Relevant data can also easily be transferred to the new phone.
