DivX is the name of a popular video compression technology. DivX video compression is based on MPEG-4. DivX is able to offer a good quality video at around one-tenth of the size of an original DVD. This means that you can easily fit a full movie on a single CD, while maintaining a good image quality. This makes DivX also very popular for movie downloads over the internet.

The sound is usually coded with MP3 or Dolby Surround Sound (AC3).

You will need a DivX codec to play DivX video. The codec is used by your media player (e.g. Windows Media player) to decode the DivX video. Nowadays, there is also a wide range of DVD players that support DivX.
